I’m always on the lookout for fun and new books for my two toddlers, so I thought I would share some of our current favorites books!
My kids LOVE books! Both of them took to books at young ages and their interest them just keeps growing. We have all kinds of books and every day is different when it comes to their tastes in stories…but we have some tried and true favorites that are always in rotation!
We go through our usual stack daily, sometimes multiple times. There’s a few now that Lark can “read” to Arlo because we’ve read them so much, she now has them memorized. You’ll notice some of these are holiday books, but that’s because my kids are obsessed with Halloween and Christmas (I can’t even count the times we’ve watched Nightmare Before Christmas or Elf on the Shelf in this house). Some favorite subjects are counting books or anything with busy pages that let us play “can you find the…” as we read through the stories. I hope my kids always love to read.
1 ~ Pete the Cat Storybook Collection – The kids got this book for Christmas and they both love it, especially Arlo! Three of the stories inside are about Arlo’s favorite things – baseball, dinosaurs and robots. They’re short stories with really fun artwork.
2 ~ 10 Trick-or-Treaters – This is, by far, the favorite out of all of these! My kids are obsessed with anything Halloween and this is such a fun book. It’s a counting book with short rhymes on each page and lots of busy illustrations. Lark can “read” this one to Arlo now as she’s memorized it, word-for-word…There’s even parts of the story that Arlo can recite now too!
3 & 6 ~ A Halloween Scare in Michigan & Santa is Coming to Michigan – Yes, more Halloween…and Christmas! We love these books for the awesome artwork and the personal connection to our home state (one even mentions our town by name!)…I believe they’re available for every state!
4 ~ Little Owl’s Night – This is an oldie for us, but a goodie! We picked this one up when Lark was an infant. I’m a sucker for cute illustrations and this one doesn’t disappoint. A cute story all about what happens at night when the rest of the world is asleep.
5 ~ Ten Little Teddy Bears Splashing in the Bath – This was a Valentine’s gift. Since my kids can’t eat chocolate due to food allergies, books make a great alternative gift for holidays. This another counting book about ten, mischevious teddy bears…the little bears are squishy and a great sensory perk. Super cute when Arlo just says ‘squishy’ with a smooshed face!
7 & 8 ~ Jane Foster’s ABC & Jane Foster’s 123 – These were a gift from a dear friend before Arlo was born. Again, the art is fantastic! Folk-sy and primitive in style with lots of colors and contrast. They’re simple books, but my kids absolutely adore them!
9 ~ Secrets of the Apple Tree – This book is not only beautiful (yep, raving about artwork again over here), it’s interactive and whimsical! Each page looks innocent enough, but shine a flashlight through the back of the page and reveal hidden pictures while learning about nature!
10 & 11 ~ Goodnight Moon & Goodnight Gorilla – Two classic goodnight books that both my kids continue to go nuts over! Ours are getting so tattered from countless times of turning pages and saying goodnight! They love finding all the fun, little details on every page like the moon and the red balloon…
12 ~ You Are My Cupcake – Another oldie from a dear friend before Lark was born. Another super quick and simple book, but the art is adorable! Very kitschy and kawaii with fun little quips like “you are my oven-baked cutie pie…”
13 ~ Melissa and Doug Water Wow Books – These are a newer find for us and they’re so awesome! They come equipped with a refillable brush pen and they’re fully reusable, over and over again. The pages start our white with basic outlines, but when you paint with the water, it reveals hidden pictures, numbers, letters and patterns. Then the pages dry to white again and you can ‘paint’ again. Even I love painting these books!
14 ~ Lost My Name Books – These books are beyond amazing! Personalize the story to your child with name and even hair color! They’re beautifully illustrated and they literally make me cry at the last page EVERY TIME! They have a couple of new designs as well that I’m planning to pick up for my kids!
There are so many more I could have included, maybe I need a part two! My kids seriously love all kinds of books and I hope that love only grows. Imagination and creativity are very important to me and I feel that books help nurture that. Lark has also started to recognize words and letters early on, thanks to so many books in our routine! I hope you enjoy our summary of favorites and find some new picks for your kids!
