Today I’m talking cribs…I posted about the Ikea Sundvik Crib in my “more affordable” nursery post, and we were basically in love with it. Especially the fact that it came in this “Gray-Brown” color.

Ikea Sundvik Crib // $119 // Ikea.com |
But let me tell you a little story…
My mom asked if she could purchase the crib for us. I sent over the link, so she could purchase online as this particular crib was not available in our Ikea store (of course). At $119, it’s a great deal. It doesn’t include the mattress, but I think the mattress itself is only $99. At any rate, upon loading up her Ikea shopping cart, she noticed their outrageous shipping charges…
They wanted to charge $76 to ship the damn thing. I realize it’s heavy, and probably awkward, but seriously?! Shipping that’s almost as much as the crib itself?! Outrageous! And they don’t offer “ship-to-store” or anything like that. I told my mom to forget it, the $119 crib was going to cost almost $200 without a mattress.
So here’s what I did…I complained on twitter.
Which has served me well in the past, like getting new deals on cable service. In true twitter fashion, Ikea responded and asked me to shoot them an email and they’d see if they could help. I wrote a very complain-y, yet polite, email, stating that they’d be losing this sale due to their outrageous shipping costs and that I’d found an alternate, via walmart.com, that had free shipping to your home or free shipping to the nearest store.
Their advice…after restating their shipping policy verbatim in the email, “Maybe if you purchased more items, the shipping wouldn’t seem so bad.” Excuse me?! You’re telling an upset consumer to buy MORE stuff from you?! Not to mention the fact that the only other item (at the time) would have been the mattress, and being that their shipping is obviously done by weight, we would not have saved, AT ALL.
It was frustrating. And heartbreaking to not get the crib I wanted (insert tantrum here).
But I found this baby, for $89 at walmart.com…with a $60 mattress…and FREE shipping!

Storkcraft – Sheffield 2-in-1 Fixed-Side Convertible Crib, Espresso // walmart.com |
My main requests for a crib were, basically, modern and simple. And while it’s not the gray-brown color we fell in love with, it is the original espresso color that I had chosen at first.
It hasn’t come in yet, but I know it’s going to be perfect! And it’s the first big item checked off of our list! Thanks to ma and pa…
I’m so glad I found this alternative! What were your requirements when purchasing a crib?
